Part 1- 250 words explain the following:

how one poet/songwriter presents a view of social inequality. How does each song illustrate that the economic conditions in the “rust belt” or impoverished areas often affects the ability of one segment of the population to achieve economic prosperity? Choose one particular image in your song choice which symbolizes this plight.

Part 2- This is a peer response to the above in 100 words add to the discussion (i.e. posing questions, reflecting on their response, etc.

Here is my peers response:

After listening to each one, I chose Beyonce’s song “Formation” to write about for my post. An example of social inequality with the song would be when she is sending a message about how African American females and girls are often discriminated against for how they wear their hair. Some individuals claim to be offended by or dislike the natural hair styles that African American girls and women, and men and boys too, have. These individuals often protest or petition for their hair to be “maintained” or combed and brushed, or even styled. In the song, Beyonce includes the lyrics, “I like my baby heir with baby hair and afros” (Beyonce). This is deemed as a social inequality because it shows that African Americans are teased and threatened to change something natural about themselves in order to fit the interests or expectations of others. A good example that is included in Beyonce’s song that relates to economic conditions in the “rust belt” would be Hurricane Katrina and the effects it had in the South. The beginning of Formation starts with “What happened at the New Wil’ins?” (Beyonce). This relates to Hurricane KAtrina and the effect it had in the New Orleans. It can also give meaning asking what happened there and why didn’t the government make an effort to take care of the people in New Orleans, and do anything to save all those who lost their lives. The Hurricane brought destruction to the city and forced them to loose lots and lots of money. The image in the song would be when it shows footage of the aftermath of Katrina in the New Orleans.
