Topic According to Longinus, what are three qualities (the three qualities each become a key word) that an artist must possess to produce a piece of writing struck by the sublime?
The Epigraph As discussed in class, begin your essay with an epigraph.
Essay Structure Your essay must contain five paragraphs: an introduction, three paragraphs in the body of the essay, and a conclusion. Follow the essay structure described on pages 80-81in I Know What I Want to Say, but I Don’t Know How to Say It.
MLA Guidelines Use the MLA guidelines to format your essay and to present your direct quotations. Follow MLA guidelines from I Know What I Want to Say, but I Don’t Know How to Say It that we discuss in class. If you have any questions, regarding the MLA guidelines, ask them during the workshop.
Point of View Write your essays in third person point of view. See section FOUR: Avoid Confusing Shifts in Point of View on page 46 in I Know What I Want to Say, but I Don’t Know How to Say It.
Workshop for Essay 1 If you would like feedback on your essay, please ask our embedded tutor Laura Hand for advice. You may ask her questions on the discussion board in her thread Tuesday Tutoring from 2:00-4:00 with Laura Hand. Please post your questions along with an MS Word attachment of your essay so Laura can reference it. Laura will answer questions on the following topics:
A. Following the assignment sheet. B. Following the MLA guidelines. C. Following pages 80-81 in I Know What I Want to Say, but I Don’t Know How to Say It. D. Following the practice essay. E. In addition, Laura will read your introductory paragraph and tell you whether or not you need to proofread more
carefully and/ or whether or not you have incomplete sentences. She will not point out specific errors and fix them for you.
If you have specific questions on the areas listed above, feel free to ask. Post your questions by next Tuesday, and Laura will answer your questions during her next tutoring session.
If you have questions on essay 1 that fall outside of A-E, feel free to ask me during my office hours, which you will find on the discussion board. Thank you.
Effort, Rubric, and Proofreading Please review the effort statement and the rubric (page 5 of the syllabus) and proofread your essay very carefully (page 6 of the syllabus) before submitting your final revision. Thank you.
Submitting Your Essay and the DUE DATE An electronic copy of your essay must be submitted through our Canvas site via Turnitin. Hard copies will not be accepted. To submit your electronic copy, follow the assignments tab. I am extending the due date; your electronic copy must be submitted by Sunday, February 16 at 11:59PM. For information regarding late work, please read the syllabus. Before you submit your essay. Make sure you have followed all the guidelines on this assignment sheet.
Plagiarism Do not copy work by another student, do not copy the practice essay, do not copy something you found on the internet, do not plagiarize in any way, shape or form. Consider yourselves warned. The first student to find the fragment on this assignment sheet will receive five points extra credit. I will post a thread on the discussion board titled Fragment. On that thread, tell me what you think is the fragment. Format your post correctly (as described in the syllabus). Thank you.
